Isaiah 62 Prayer Letter - April 2021

Dear prayer partners,

With Passover week and Resurrection Sunday now behind us, we find ourselves in the time of the counting of the omer. This is the 50-day period between Passover and Pentecost in which special grain offerings were made at the Temple to thank the Lord for the barley and wheat harvests each spring. It begins on the first day after the Passover (or the first Shabbat during Pessach week for some), and runs 49 days until the Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot. Each day, a specific measure of grain – an omer – was offered by the priests in the Temple in Jerusalem.

This unique season of the ‘counting of the omer’ provides important lessons for our faith and prayer life today.

1) Patience!
God is never late on anything and He has set our times and seasons beforehand. In fact, there is a purpose for every timing set by the Lord, and sometimes we must wait on Him with patience and faith to see them through. Jesus told his disciples to tarry in Jerusalem until they were indued with power from on high. And “when the Day of Pentecost had fully come” (Acts 2:1), the Holy Spirit fell upon those gathered in the Upper Room and the Church was born in fire and great power. God’s timing is always perfect! This also showed there was a mighty prophetic purpose hidden in the counting of the omer.

No doubt, there are great prophetic and redemptive purposes in operation in our times, and our prayers should be aligned to work them out in our own lives every day. This is especially true when it comes to the promised restoration of Israel in these last days. His timing is always perfect, and with patience and faith we shall surely see the Jewish people reach their destiny in God as a nation. We also should not grow weary when the world seems to be headed in a very ungodly direction. Psalm 75:2 says: “When I choose the proper time, I will judge uprightly.”

2) Gratitude!
The grain offerings during the counting of the omer were an act of faith and thankfulness for the Lord’s provision through the barley and wheat harvests each year. Before these harvests were fully brought in, the Israelites had to already begin thanking God for them, and offering up the “first fruits” of these harvests to ensure the whole yield would be blessed.

It remains the same today. When we pray for something, we must begin to thank the Lord for the answer even before we receive it. God desires an offering of praise made in faith, which is more pleasing to Him than our thanks after the answer has arrived. And we cannot take God’s provision in our lives for granted, but must offer up a measure of gratitude each and every day through our prayers and thanksgiving to the Lord.

3) Obedience!
Israel needed to follow the commands of the Lord to be blessed in their fields. It meant that not only the grain offerings had to be presented in their due time each spring, but the people of Israel also had to let the land lie fallow every seventh year. And when the Israelites failed to observe these commands, they were exiled for seventy years to make up for the years the land was not allowed to rest (see Leviticus 26:34-35; 2 Chronicles 36:20-21; Jeremiah 25:12; Daniel 9:2).

So obedience to the Lord’s commands is very important in our lives, even under the New Covenant. The disciples of Jesus needed to follow his command to wait in Jerusalem until the power of God fell. Thank the Lord for their obedience! And if we are faithful to the commands of the Lord in our day, there will surely be great reward.

Thank you for joining us again in prayer this month. May the Lord bless you richly and answer your prayers in His perfect timing.
