US warns Lebanon against Ahmadinejad visit

The US State Department said on Tuesday it had warned the Lebanese government about the risks of a visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Lebanon next week. "Iran, through its association with groups like Hizbullah, is actively undermining Lebanon's sovereignty,” cautioned State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. Lebanon's largest parliamentary bloc, the Western-backed "March 14 Forces" coalition, is aware of such concerns, noting that Ahmadinejad regards Lebanon as "an Iranian base on the Mediterranean." Ahmadinejad is expected to visit Hizbullah bastions in southern Lebanon, where a replica of the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem is being built and scores of Iranian flags can already be seen flying.
