Turkey lashes out at Israel amid widening rift

Turkish lawyers representing pro-Palestinian activists have made an official complaint to the International Criminal Court, accusing Israeli troops of committing war crimes during the Mavi Marmara flotilla incident in May. Attorney Ugur Sevgili explained Thursday that his clients want Israel investigated for torture, inhuman treatment and violations of the Geneva war crimes convention. The new complaint comes two months after the UN Human Rights Council claimed that there is "clear evidence to support prosecutions" against the Israeli troops who participated in the interception for “willful killing and torture” among other things. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called the report "biased and distorted." In related news, Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay told the Turkish news paper Hurriyet Tuesday that Turkey won’t be sending any representatives to Israel for an upcoming OECD Tourism Conference. “We want tourism to take place, not politics,” Gunay explained. The announcement comes a few days after a similar announcement was made by trade representatives from the UK.
