Russia to sell advanced anti-ship missiles to Syria

The Russian newspaper Ria Novosti reported on Friday that the Kremlin intends to go through with a deal to supply the Syrian army with advanced P-800 Yakhont supersonic anti-ship rockets and other weapons despite heavy pressure from the US and Israel, which recently signed a broad military cooperation deal with Russia. Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov admitted that "the matter of missile sales to Syria was raised during the talks with US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and undoubtedly, the Russian side of the contract would be fulfilled." Israel fears that if the Yakhont missiles fall into the hands of Hizbullah they would pose a major threat to its naval operations in the event of resumed hostilities.
