PA unwelcomes Israeli assisted journalists

Foreign journalists are “unwelcome” in the West Bank if they come through Israeli media facilitators, the Palestinian Authority announced on Monday. Th sudden move is seen as an attempt to exert tighter control of the media coverage in PA-ruled areas. A spokesman for the PA said the foreign journalists should coordinate their visits to the West Bank through the PA’s press office and not through Israeli bodies. The move came in response to a journalistic field tour of Jericho - which is marking its supposed 10,000 year anniversary as the world's oldest city -  that was organized by the Jerusalem-based office of "Media Central," an organization which offers services to the foreign press corps in assisting them in covering Israel and the region. The Palestinians have similar media stringers and initiatives operating out of the American Colony hotel in eastern Jerusalem. Media Central had organized the field tour with the PA tourism minister and mayor of Jericho, but learned today through a PA spokesman that the visit was off. The reason for the cancellation may be that the agenda included not only briefings and interviews about the Arab presence in Jericho but also its rich Jewish past, such as the Shalom Israel synagogue - considered the oldest synagogue ever found dating back to more than 100 years before Christ.
