Moscow to return deposit to Tehran for canceled S-300 sale

Sergei Chemezov, head of the state-controlled conglomerate Russian Technologies, told Reuters on Thursday that Russia will repay Iran its $166.8 million deposit in compensation for its backing out of a contract to supply the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps with the advanced S-300 air defense missile system. Russia cancelled the sale in late September, after deciding that the transfer was banned by the most recent round of UN Security Council sanctions. The sophisticated system can reportedly track and intercept up to 100 incoming aircraft and ballistic missiles at once, a capability that could have greatly hindered Israeli or Western pre-emptive strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
