Jewish leaders slam archbishop’s remarks

Prominent Jewish leaders have urged Pope Benedict XVI in recent days to denounce a statement by Melkite Catholic Archbishop Cyril Salim Bustros on Saturday at the close of the recent Vatican Synod on the plight of Christians in the Middle East. The archbishop angered many by saying, “We Christians cannot speak about the promised land for the Jewish people. There is no longer a chosen people… The concept of the promised land cannot be used as a base for the justification of the return of Jews to Israel... We Christians cannot speak of the ‘promised land’ as an exclusive right for a privileged Jewish people... This promise was nullified by Christ.” Israeli officials say it not only insulted every Jew, but undermined everything that has been done by Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI for the reconciliation between Jews and Christians, adding that the Archbishop’s words may damage interfaith relations and embolden anti- Semites and terrorists.
