Israel runs drills while Ahmadinejad in Lebanon

Israel held an exercise in Jerusalem and the West Bank on Tuesday evening, simulating a mass casualty incident which involved the participation of thousands of personnel and dozens of vehicles from the IDF, police, Shin Bet security Agency, firefighters and emergency services. The drill included a mock hostage situation at the Prime Minister’s Office and a possible chemical attack near the Foreign Ministry building in Jerusalem. The mostly civilian drill comes a day after the IDF conducted a large-scale field training exercise in the North of the country simulating riots among Israeli Arab communities in reaction to a population exchange agreement with the Palestinian Authority. There was also a large IDF live fire exercise in the Southern region on Tuesday. The Negev drill included elements of the Armored Corps, Infantry, Gunners and Engineering Corps coordinating land maneuver battle techniques. After the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006, the IDF assessed that the loss of these skills during years spent policing the West Bank produced a major deficiency within the IDF which urgently needed to be addressed.
