Hamas closes offices of Palestinian journalists in Gaza

Hamas security officers have closed down the offices of the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate in Gaza and begun interrogating its member reporters, the press association charged this week. The Fatah-dominated group explained that the closure of its Gaza office comes just as they had begun organizing workshops to train local journalists. Sources also state that the latest measure against its offices was part of a larger Hamas campaign aimed at targeting Palestinian journalists in general. This is not the first time Hamas has taken such measures, as during the last few years at least 25 press offices have been closed down and dozens of journalists have been arrested. The syndicate is now holding Hamas responsible for the safety of all journalists in the Gaza Strip. “We demand that Hamas also apologize for this new crime against our syndicate and its board members... We urge Arab and foreign journalists and human rights activists to intervene with Hamas to stop its repeated crimes against the syndicate and its members in the Gaza Strip," the association said in a statement.
