Bill requiring national referendum to cede Jerusalem/Golan advances in Knesset

A bill requiring a national referendum before Israel relinquishes any land in Jerusalem or the Golan Heights as part of any peace deal with either the Palestinian Authority or Syria came a step closer to becoming law on Monday, passing a special meeting of the Knesset Committee on Legislation. With the support of the committee, it is highly likely that the bill will pass the full Knesset and become law. Defense Minister Ehud Barak has come out forcefully in opposition to the bill, saying it will needlessly complicate any future peace deals. Similar bills requiring popular referendums and super majorities in parliament to cede parts of Jerusalem or the Golan have been considered by the Knesset in years past.
