Assad accuses Israel of preventing peace with Syria

Syrian president Bashar al-Assad accused Israel this week of working against peace in the region. He claimed that Israel was the root cause of the break down in the Israeli-Syrian peace talks in 2008, stating: “The Arab side really wants the peace process and the Israeli side is working [in] the opposite direction”. He further criticized the recently poroposed amendment to the Israel Citizenship Act, which would require those applying for citizenship to declare their loyal to Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. Assad claimed that the amendment is an expression of Israeli fascism.
